What is BOD?

BOD, biochemical oxygen demand, refers to the amount of dissolved oxygen consumed by microorganisms during the biological and chemical reactions that break down organic matter in water. It is a comprehensive indicator of the level of organic pollutants in water and an important parameter for assessing water quality.

Why can't we just reduce BOD?

From this definition, it seems that reducing BOD would be beneficial for improving water quality. However, there are several reasons why simply lowering BOD may not be enough:

a. The main reason for high levels of BOD in wastewater is due to industrial effluent and agricultural runoff.

b. The current wastewater collection system often lacks proper separation between sewage from households and other sources (such as factories), leading to cross-contamination.

c. Inadequate maintenance or upgrading of existing infrastructure results in reduced efficiency at treatment plants.

From a low-level perspective

The focus on "low-level" BOD concentrations highlights concerns about rainwater mixing with sewage (rainfall often dilutes pollutants) and slow-moving pipes where sedimentation occurs more easily within them; these factors contribute significantly to poor-quality discharge into rivers.

4.. Rainwater drainage systems need improvements

Rainfall causes significant stress on urban drainage networks because it overwhelms their capacity when heavy rainfall events occur frequently or simultaneously across different parts of a city’s catchment area while also impacting storm drains directly connected through combined sewer overflows (CSO). These issues result from insufficient investment in green infrastructure such as green roofs & permeable pavements which can help manage surface run-off efficiently without causing harm environmentally speaking either way around!
